Paris, Sha'ban 23, 1435, Jun 21, 2014, SPA -- Historical monuments and sites in Iraq, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Germany and the Netherlands were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List Saturday, dpa reported. The historic Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah was given the nod for its role as an important Red Sea trade route throughout its 2,500-year history as well as being a gateway for Muslim pilgrims to Mecca who travel by sea. Irbil Citadel in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq is a fortified settlement on a hill. Its walls date back to the 19th century and dominate the city's skyline. Japan's Tomioka Silk Mill, established in 1872 outside Tokyo, was honoured by the UNESCO committee as illustrating "Japan's desire to rapidly adopt the best mass production techniques" during the Industrial Age. A Benedictine monastery in central Germany became the country's 39th World Heritage Site. The Imperial Abbey of Corvey was founded in 822 under the patronage of Emperor Louis the Pious, a son of Frankish king Charlemagne. It was joined by the Van Nellefabriek north-west of the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Throughout its history, the steel-and-glass factory built in the 1920s processed foods from coffee to instant pudding. The 38th session of the World Heritage Committee in Doha began Sunday and will continue through Wednesday. -- SPA 19:39 LOCAL TIME 16:39 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
