Washington, Sha'ban 13, 1435, Jun 11, 2014, SPA -- Tickets remain available for more than 15 World Cup matches just one day before the football tournament opens, including some games involving Germany, Italy, and France. World football governing body FIFA said it already has sold more than 2.9 million tickets, but some remained on sale Wednesday. FIFA said a total of about 3.1 million tickets will be sold for the first World Cup in Brazil since 1950. There were plenty of tickets for matches between less prominent countries, including the Bosnia-Iran and Greece-Ivory Coast contests, but it still was possible to attend games with some of the more traditional teams. For instance, fans still can buy tickets for Germany-Ghana, France-Switzerland, and Italy-Uruguay. Tickets for Thursday’s opening Brazil-Croatia match in Sao Paulo, as well as the July 13 final in Rio de Janeiro sold out quickly. FIFA said it received an “unprecedented number” of almost 11 million ticket requests for the tournament in Brazil. It sold a total of about 2.2 million tickets directly via its website to the general public, and the remainder went mostly to hospitality programs. About 60 percent of the tickets went to Brazilians, and Americans were the second-biggest buyers with nearly 200,000. --SPA 20:56 LOCAL TIME 17:56 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
