United Nations, Sha'ban 7, 1435, Jun 5, 2014, SPA -- More than 1,000 participants from government, business, international organizations, and civil-society groups met Wednesday at U.N. headquarters to begin a three-day forum designed to mobilize investment and action to realize the goal of ensuring universal sustainable energy. The first annual Sustainable Energy for All Forum will help build towards the U.N. climate-change summit to be convened in September. “The forum is shaping up to be a major stepping stone, where we can collectively assess the results of our commitments, spur new efforts, and together chart a way forward to achieve our objectives,”Kandeh Yumkella, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s special representative on the initiative. Launched by Ban in 2011, the initiative seeks to ensure universal access to modern energy service, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy supply, all by 2030. --SPA 11:30 LOCAL TIME 08:30 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
