Washington, Ramadan 12, 1435, July 09, 2014, SPA -- The chief of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) warned Tuesday that Afghanistan must sign a security agreement on a post-combat international training mission by September or there will be “severe” problems for the Western defense alliance. Anders Fogh Rasmussen said after meeting President Barack Obama that allegations of voter fraud were a “grave concern” and he hoped an audit could produce a credible outcome so that a new Afghan president could sign security deals before the NATO summit in Britain in early September. “If there is no clarification of this process before the NATO summit in September, it is hard to see how the security agreements could be signed before the summit,” the NATO secretary-general told reporters at the White House. “In that case, we would be faced with severe problems as regards planning for a training mission after 2014.” Rasmussen emphasized that Afghanistan signing a bilateral security agreement (BSA) with the United States and a separate pact with NATO members was a “prerequisite” for a military force that initially will number 10,000 before gradually shrinking over the next several years. --SPA 12:26 LOCAL TIME 09:26 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
