Police searching for Laurel Aldridge, sister-in-law of the actor Mackenzie Crook, have found a body. Aldridge, 62, was reported missing from her home in the village of Walberton, near Arundel in West Sussex, on 14 February and was last seen at Slindon Cricket Club about two and a half miles away. On Saturday, Sussex police said: “Sadly the body of a woman has been found in the Tortington Lane area of Arundel. “At this stage, the family of missing Laurel Aldridge have been informed and we are seeking to confirm the identity of the woman.” In a Facebook post, Laurel Aldridge’s son Matthew announced his mother’s body was found. “After a long and exhausting search, today we found Laurel,” he wrote. “We can share that she was found lying in a beautiful woodland and she is now at peace. “We will miss her every day, but we are so proud of everything she achieved in her 62 years on this earth. Laurel was a wonderful, creative, fiercely-intelligent person, who taught us all the meaning of empathy, dependability, and love.” He continued: “We as a family are broken by what has happened, but we have each other, we have our friends, and we have the support of the local community, who have so kindly rallied around us during this difficult time. We will never forget what you have done for us. “For the time being, we are asking for privacy so that we can be together as a family and process our loss.” A week after Aldridge’s disappearance, Crook appeared on ITV show Good Morning Britain to appeal for the public to help with finding his wife’s older sister. The British actor, who is known for roles in The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean and Worzel Gummidge, said his sister-in-law’s disappearance had been “very out of character” and “agonising” for the family. Appearing at Slindon cricket ground, where Aldridge was last sighted, he said: “It was this time last Tuesday that she left the house with nothing but the clothes she was wearing, with no keys, money, phone … and she’s not been seen since.” Crook went on to explain that Aldridge, who is considered “very vulnerable”, was diagnosed with cancer last year and missed her fifth chemotherapy session on the day she went missing. Asked if she had any clues as to where she might be, the actor said that the South Downs area had an “overwhelming” amount of woodland, and that the family had been combing it carefully in search of their missing relative. “We can only think that hopefully she has taken shelter in a back garden, a shed, or an outhouse. We’re asking people to check all of those places, even if they’ve already done it.” Crook, 51, previously described his sister-in-law as a “wonderful mother” and “usually very happy”. Speaking to the BBC, he said: “It is terrible, it’s like a nightmare, in a way we’re waiting to wake up from it but we’ve got each other and we’ve received a lot of love and support from the wider community and that’s really helping us get through.”
