Yanqing, China, February 13, 2022, SPA -- Heavy snowfall has delayed the start of the second run of the men's Olympic giant slalom ski race on Sunday, the dpa reported. Organizers were unable to move all the fresh snow out of the Yanqing piste and it was decided to push back the start by 75 minutes to 3 pm (0700 GMT). It was however unclear if fair conditions could be created by then as snow continued to fall. In addition, the hill has no floodlight which means that organizers could run out of daylight with further delays. Fog and snowfall had also marred the first run after which the top four were separated by a mere 12-hundredths of a second. Four-time giant slalom season winner and overall World Cup leader Marco Odermatt was first, four-hundredths ahead of Austria's Stefan Breensteiner, with reigning world champion Mathieu Faivre of France and Norway Henrik Kristoffersen also within striking distance. The 2019 world champion Kristoffersen said the conditions were difficult for everyone as 35 of the 89 starters failed to finish. But he said that racing was safe: "The light is more than skiable, that's for sure, it just makes it difficult." The heavy snow had earlier in the day led to the cancellation of the second women's downhill training and freeski slopestyle qualifying. Earlier at the Games, high winds forced organizers to hold the men's downhill a day later than planned. --SPA 10:24 LOCAL TIME 07:24 GMT 0008 www.spa.gov.sa/w1690777
