Fort Knox, Kentucky, July 26, SPA -- A U.S. soldier charged withmurder in the death of an Iraqi police officer revealed thetruth behind months of conflicting stories with a clearstatement of guilt, The Associated Press reported today. Cpl. Dustin Berg, 22, pleaded guilty Monday to a lessercharge of negligent homicide in a shooting he hadpreviously claimed was self-defense. But during hiscourt-martial, Berg said the November 2003 shooting was arash judgment. He said it was a mistake to try to cover upthe incident by shooting himself in the stomach. "If you ask me now, if I'm sorry for what I did, I don'tknow if sorry is the word for it. You can't explain what itdoes to you when you take somebody else's life," he said."There is no punishment, there is nothing anybody can dothat can take away the nightmares that come every nightwhen I lay my head down to go to bed." Berg, of Ferdinand, Indiana, will spend 18 months inprison under a plea agreement. He will also be dischargedfrom the Army for bad conduct.--SPA1250 Local Time 0950 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
