ALULA: The AlUla Design Award is returning for its second edition following a successful first round. The award recognizes exceptional design inspired by AlUla’s heritage, landscapes and artistic legacy. It invites emerging and established designers to conceptualize and propose several categories of retail items, including jewelry, footwear, clothing, home accessories and leather goods. In addition to being recognized by their peers, winners will receive an invitation to the Product Design Exhibition and winners announcement taking place at Paris Design Week in September. The winning designs, proposed products and the designers themselves will also be highlighted through Arts AlUla’s communication channels. The logo of the AlUla Design Award will be added to the winning product and Arts AlUla will purchase initial stock. A budget will be set for every designer and discussed when they reach the final stage of the award. Submissions will be evaluated by a jury of well-established figures from the world of design, including Saudi entrepreneur and influencer Yara Al-Namlah; Raghad Hazzazi of the Royal Commission for AlUla; Robert Frith of Ithra; and Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation strategic adviser Cyril Zammit. Shortlisted design proposals will receive commissions, support and promotion within AlUla and its network of influential and high-profile online and international activities. To apply, candidates must sign up on the award portal, submit an application, pay an SR200 ($53) application fee and upload their concepts in 3D render format. Any designs submitted as a sketch will be eliminated. AlUla Design Award’s first winner, Tarek El-Kassouf, said: “It has been a rigorous journey of innovation, and witnessing our efforts coming to life leads us to appreciate such opportunities presented by Arts AlUla to the creative community all around the world.” Entries close on March 30.
