Kylian Mbappé has been named France’s new captain by head coach, Didier Deschamps. The 24-year-old succeeds Hugo Lloris in the role following his retirement from international football. Mbappé has become France’s biggest star having been part of the World Cup-winning team in 2018 as a teenager. He has scored 36 goals in his 66 international appearances and became only the second player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final during France’s defeat to Argentina in Qatar last year. “Didier Deschamps has named Kylian Mbappé the new captain of Les Bleus,” confirmed the France Football Federation. French TV channel TF1 also quoted Deschamps from an interview to be aired on Sunday. “Kylian meets all the requirements to have this responsibility,” he said. “On the field as in the life of the group, by being a unifying element.” The Paris Saint-Germain forward’s first match as France captain will be Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands. Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann has been named vice-captain.
