Police are questioning a 12-year-old boy on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 60s was struck and killed by a car in a “tragic” incident in Sheffield. Officers were called to the Greenhill area of the city at about 7.10pm on Wednesday after receiving reports that a woman had been hit by a vehicle, South Yorkshire police said. The woman was seriously injured and died at the scene, the force said. The boy was found a short time later and arrested on suspicion of murder and possession of a bladed article. He remained in police custody on Thursday night. DCI Andrea Bowell said: “This will be a deeply distressing time for the families of those involved in this incident, and I would ask their privacy is respected as they seek to understand what has happened.” A number of floral tributes were laid at the scene in Hemper Lane on Thursday. One card read: “I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful soul.” A neighbour told YorkshireLive: “It’s just really sad, I don’t feel like I can say too much at this moment. It’s just tragic though and it does come as a massive shock.” Another said: “It’s normally really quiet round here. I know someone has been killed but not sure about anything else. It’s just a nice, quiet place to live, so this has come as a shock to be honest.” Anybody with information is asked to get in touch with police on 101. Alternatively, people can anonymously report any information via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or using the Crimestoppers online form.
