The global film industry is anticipating the announcement of the program of the 76th edition of Cannes Film Festival, and the list of movies that have been selected to compete for the Palm D’Or. President of Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Fremaux is set to announce the program and the list on Thursday, April 14, at one of the Champs Elysees’ cinema theaters, one month before the start of the competition for the esteemed award, AFP reported. It has been confirmed that Martin Scorsese will attend the screening of his new film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” alongside stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. The star of last year’s edition was Tom Cruise with the “Top Gun: Maverick”, however, this year, Harrison Ford is expected to steal the lights with his new ‘Indiana Jones’ film dubbed ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” The Cannes Film Festival this year will also witness a powerful comeback of Johnny Depp, following the fierce court battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp will attend the screening of his film “Jeanne du Barry” premiering at the opening ceremony. The movie is directed by French Director Maïwenn, who selected Depp to play the role of King Louis XV. Louis Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’ is expected to be among the qualified films given that the director, who rarely misses the Cannes list, has brought together several esteemed names including Tom Hanks, and partners Tilda Swinton and Adrien Brody who had previously co-starred his film “The French Dispatch”. The rest of the list is yet to be revealed on Thursday. It is expected to feature prominent directors such as Japanese Hirokazu Koreeda, Finnish Aki Kaurismäki, and British Ken Loach, as well as emerging talents including French Justine Triet, in addition to several films that have been making headlines in the past few months such as ‘Barbie’ starred by Australian star Margot Robbie, and Canadian Ryan Gosling as ‘Ken’. On the other hand, some observers are eyeing the share the festival has allocated to films directed by women, and the diversity of the selections. This year’s edition of the international festival also comes amidst persisting sexual harassment accusations of some famous cinema figures.
