The Prince Mohammed bin Salman project for the development of historic mosques began restoration of the historic Al-Qalaa mosque in the town of Hanakiya, about 102 kilometers northeast of Madinah. The mosque is over 100 years old and is added to the list of mosques that the project aims to restore for their historical and social impact in shaping their human, cultural and intellectual surroundings. The project will renovate the historical Madinah-style mosque to increase its area from 181.75 square meters to 263.55 square meters with a capacity to accommodate 171 worshippers after a period of disuse. The project will use natural materials of mud and local lumber to rebuild the mosque in its old form and preserve the building techniques that characterize it in its ability to cope with the local environment and the hot desert climate. Al-Qalaa Mosque is one of 30 mosques that the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project will renovate in its second phase in all 13 regions of the Kingdom, including six mosques in Riyadh, five mosques in Makkah, four mosques in Madinah, three in Asir, two in each of the Eastern Region, Al-Jouf, and Jazan, and one mosque in each of the Northern Borders Region, Tabuk, Al-Baha, Najran, Hail, and Al-Qassim.
