The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council welcomed on Tuesday the efforts led by Saudi Arabia between Yemeni parties to achieve peace in their country. In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom’s liaison team, headed by Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al-Jaber, met with Chairman of the PLC Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi as part of Riyadh’s ongoing efforts and peace initiative in Yemen. The peace initiative was announced in 2021 and approved by the Yemeni government at the time. It was followed up with a nationwide ceasefire that was declared from Saudi Arabia in April 2022. Al-Jaber conveyed to Al-Alimi the greetings of the Saudi leadership and hopes that all current efforts between Yemeni parties would revive the peace process that would yield a sustainable and comprehensive solution in Yemen. The officials discussed the outcomes of the meetings between Saudi, Houthi and Omani officials in Sanaa between April 8 and 13. The PLC welcomed the Saudi and Omani efforts, praising the keenness on the importance of going ahead with the necessary humanitarian steps to ease the suffering of the people throughout Yemen. The Saudi Foreign Ministry had previously said that Al-Jaber will continue to hold more meetings on Yemen in the nearest possible future with the aim of reaching a comprehensive and lasting political solution that is accepted by all Yemeni parties. Yemen and the international community are hoping that the Saudi efforts would lead to an agreement between the legitimate government and Iran-backed Houthi militias over a roadmap for peace that would start with a ceasefire, humanitarian steps and negotiations that would lead to peace. Last week, the government and Houthis completed a prisoner exchange that saw the release of some 900 detainees in an operation that was overseen by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
