GENEVA (4 May 2023) –The International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the Context of Law Enforcement will hold a press conference in Washington D.C. on 5 May 2023 at the end of its first mission to the United States of America to share preliminary findings from its visit. The press conference will take place on Friday 5 May from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (D.C. time/ EDT) at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street NW, 13th floor – Zenger Room, Washington D.C. Remote participation will be made available. Media wishing to attend this press conference must express their interest by sending an email to yasmine.hadjoudj@un.org and alan.mayo@un.org ENDS Justice Yvonne Mokgoro (South Africa, chairperson); Dr. Tracie Keesee (United States of America) and Professor Juan Méndez (Argentina) were appointed by the President of the Human Rights Council in December 2021 to serve as independent experts. The International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the Context of Law Enforcement was established in July 2021 by the Human Rights Council to make recommendations, inter alia, on the concrete steps needed to ensure access to justice, accountability and redress for excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement officials against Africans and people of African descent.
