RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education have launched the Manga Education Program to educate younger generations in the art of making manga comics. The program targets middle and secondary grades in public, private and international schools as part of the virtual extra-curricular activities implemented in the Madrasati Platform. The program consists of 10 educational episodes, the content of which was built according to best practices and international standards by experts in Japanese universities. The aim of the program is to equip students with the skills necessary to produce comics, including creating characters, writing and drawing storyboard events. Manga is a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels that make use of cartoon drawings and, unlike Western comics, are read from right to left. The manga program falls within a partnership between the ministries that aims to promote artistic values and motivate students to create artwork inspired by national cultural identity. It comes as part of a larger strategy to develop cultural capabilities by including the arts in public education.
