RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan exchanged phone calls with Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, and the president of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan on Tuesday. The Saudi minister of foreign affairs first held talks with Al-Burhan and then extended a call to his rival to discuss the latest developments in Sudan. During both calls, the foreign minister renewed the Kingdom’s call to stop all forms of escalation in Sudan and return to a political solution in order to ensure the return of security and stability to Sudan. Prince Faisal stressed the importance of commitment from both sides to restore the course of humanitarian work and ensure the safety of humanitarian corridors for the delivery of essential aid to people in Sudan. The Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to support the Sudanese people and to find a political solution to the crisis, ongoing since April. In May Saudi Arabia and the US managed to bring the two sides to hold talks and sign the Jeddah Declaration, a commitment to peace which agreed to allow the unimpeded movement and delivery of humanitarian assistance to Sudan. There have been multiple ceasefires facilitated by the Kingdom and the US to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians, but violence has continued. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated the country’s commitments to pursuing a peaceful political solution. The Kingdom has aided in evacuating 8,455 people of 110 nationalities since the conflict began. On May 7 Saudi Arabia announced that the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid would provide aid worth $100 million to the Sudanese people. Riyadh also participated in the High-Level Pledging Event for Sudan and the Region on Monday. The event was held virtually under the joint presidency of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Germany, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the EU, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
