RIYADH: A team of Saudi students won four awards at the European Physics Olympiad 2023, Saudi Press Agency reported. The olympiad, which ran in its seventh edition, was held in Hannover, Germany from June 16-20. Around 181 students from 38 countries competed in the event, with the Kingdom being represented by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, or Mawhiba. Three Saudi students, who spent over 2,000 hours training for the competition, won bronze medals, whilst one student received a certificate of recognition. Mawhiba Secretary-General Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa said that the win as well as the work of the foundation is in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, and carved the path toward making the Kingdom among the top 20 countries globally for education and qualifications. The Saudi team participating in the EuPhO underwent intensive preparation, training their critical thinking skills by performing unfamiliar physics experiments. EuPhO is a contest for high school students. The concept is similar to real research situations, with short problems description and plenty of space for creative solutions.
