Arctic Monkeys will headline Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage on Friday night, the festival has confirmed, after the performance was thrown into doubt because of illness. The rock band announced on Monday that their frontman, Alex Turner, had acute laryngitis, which forced them to cancel their show in Marlay Park, Dublin on Wednesday. In a statement on social media, the band had said they were extremely sorry to cancel the Dublin concert, adding: “Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis and, following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.” Ticketholders for the gig will be refunded. Broadcasting from the grounds of the festival at Worthy Farm, Zoë Ball asked during her BBC Radio 2 show whether the band were still due to play on Friday evening, and co-organiser Emily Eavis replied: “They’re on,” which was welcomed with applause. “It was a little bit close there for a minute and we were thinking about whether we should have a serious backup plan in place, but no, thankfully they’re on, so that’s great,” she added. People at Glastonbury had already speculated that the gig would go ahead, after the band’s trucks were spotted behind the Pyramid stage on Thursday night. It will be the Sheffield band’s third time headlining the festival after topping the bill in 2007 and 2013. The band will be joint three-time headliners along with Elvis Costello, Van Morrison and Radiohead. Other events on Friday at Glastonbury include film screenings, theatre and circus performances and a debate titled Solidarity With Iran, which will feature the British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was imprisoned by Tehran for six years.
