Scooter driver dies after collision with ambulance in Barnsley

A man in his 30s has died after a collision between a scooter and an ambulance responding to an emergency call. The driver was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries. South Yorkshire police said the ambulance driver was helping police with their inquiries. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened in Hoylandswaine near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, on Friday night. A South Yorkshire police spokesperson said: “We request that the privacy of the victim’s family is respected at this difficult time. We are again appealing for anyone with information to come forward. “We would particularly like to speak to anyone on Barnsley Road at the time who may have seen the collision, or anyone driving along either of the two Barnsley Roads who may have caught the collision on a dash camera. “We are also appealing to any premises with CCTV cameras which cover the junction to check their footage and see if those cameras caught the collision.” Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 and quote incident number 1232 of 28 July 2023. The force said footage can be emailed to enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk, quoting the above incident number in the email subject line. The collision took place on the A628 Barnsley Road at the junction with the offshoot Barnsley Road near the Lord Nelson pub. South Yorkshire police said: “At about 10.25pm we received a call from a member of the public and another report from Yorkshire ambulance service about a reported collision between an ambulance responding to an emergency call and a scooter. ” A spokesperson for Yorkshire ambulance service said: “We can confirm that an ambulance on its way to an emergency was involved in a road traffic collision with a scooter at around 10.25pm on Friday night (28 July) on the A628 Barnsley Road, Hoylandswaine. The male scooter rider sustained serious injuries and was conveyed to hospital, but very sadly died on Saturday (29 July). “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family at this very difficult time. We are working with the police to help with their investigation into the cause of the collision.”
