Pakistan president approves appointment of Kakar as caretaker PM

Pakistan President Arif Alvi on Saturday approved the appointment of Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar as caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan after the dissolution of National Assembly (NA) two days ago. Outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) Raja Riaz reached a consensus over Kakar’s name for the coveted post during a meeting here in Islamabad on Saturday and sent it to President Alvi, according to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office. “President Dr Arif Alvi has approved the appointment of Anwaar ul-Haq Kakar as caretaker prime minister. The president approved the appointment under Article 224-A of the Constitution,” a statement by the President House read. Earlier in the week, President Alvi approved the summary for dissolving the NA at the advice of outgoing PM Sharif to end the government tenure. The newly named interim prime minister will take oath Sunday. Kakar has been a member of the Senate of Pakistan since March 2018. He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan as an independent candidate in the general seat from the southwest Balochistan province in the 2018 Pakistani Senate election. Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar hails from southwestern Balochistan province and on election to the Senate has been a very active politician. He has worked as chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, and as a member of the Business Advisory Committee, Finance and Revenue, Foreign Affairs and Science and Technology. — Agencies
