Eddie Howe speaks to Sky Sports I thought we were really good, and once the goals came the confidence returned. We’ve had a difficult start to the season – the Liverpool game really hurt us – but what a response from the players in the past week: two wins, three clean sheets. It’s great to get eight different goalscorers, and there were some really important ones for individuals: Alex Isak, Sean Longstaff, Sven Botman. And to get three clean sheets in a row is a really welcome boost for us. Full time: Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle United Peep peep! That was utterly extraordinary. It’s the biggest home defeat in Sheffield United’s history and Newcastle’s biggest away win. There were eight different goalscorers: Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, the outstanding Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. Newcastle were cold and ruthless; Sheffield United, who were actually the better team at 0-0, collapsed horribly. 90+3 min “Thanks for the reminder of the number of scorers in that Liverpool-Palace 9-0,” says Steve Crisp. “To be fair, Palace were totally robbed. The first three goals were offside. Suckling was impeded for the fourth and seventh. It was never a penalty for the sixth. I don’t even have to say why the fifth and eighth should behave been disallowed and the ninth was a plain handball. So if Geoff Thomas had scored the penalty, we’d have rightly won that night (34 years ago! I’m over it).” Surely you got over it at about 2.15pm on Sunday 8 April 1990? 90+1 min Six minutes of added time. 90 min The record Premier League win, as you probably know, is 9-0. 89 min “I’m nearly certain (from fantasy football memory) that Ashley Young got four assists in the 8-2 over Arsenal,” says Brian Foley. “The internet tells me three, but I’m nearly positive I was giddy getting two goals and four assists for him that day.” I think there’s a difference between official assists and Fantasy assists, so it’s possible that both you and the internet are right. That said, he was playing in midfield that day so he doesn’t get to join the Kieran Trippier Hat-Trick Club. A poor backheader from Davies was collected by Isak, who sat Robinson down and slipped the ball nonchalantly past Foderingham. GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-8 Newcastle (Isak 87) Eight goals, eight different goalscorers. This is astonishing. 84 min Davies plays a one-two with Basham and shoots over from a tight angle. 83 min Newcastle have had 14 shots on target to Sheffield United’s one. Fourteen. 82 min This is also the biggest home defeat in Sheffield United’s history. 81 min: Newcastle substitution A Newcastle debut for Lewis Hall, who comes on to replace Bruno Guimaraes. 80 min Tonali’s corner, Anderson’s header, Foderingham’s save. He’s made a few decent saves today, the poor bloke. 80 min Sheff Utd are now bottom of the league on goal difference. They actually started this game well. 77 min “What is the highest number of different scorers in one game?” asks Richard Hirst. Liverpool had eight when they beat Crystal Palace 9-0 in 1989, and I think there were nine different goalscorers when Arsenal beat Spurs 5-4 in that hockey match in 2004-05. Not sure if that’s a record though. 76 min Vinicius Souza is booked for flattening Anderson. This scoreline equals Newcastle’s biggest victory away from home, which was against Morecambe in the League Cup in 2020-21. They’ve never won by seven goals in a league game away from home. 75 min: Sheff Utd substitution Chris Basham replaces James McAtee, whose swaggering start to the game feels a lifetime ago. GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-7 Newcastle (Guimaraes 73) This is getting a bit weird. Longstaff’s shot deflects across the area to Guimaraes, who calmly places the ball into the corner. Newcastle are 7-0 up! 73 min Richard Hirst suggests Trent Alexander-Arnold as somebody who may have managed a hat-trick of assists. And he’s right. I think Kyle Walker-Peters managed it as well when Spurs beat Bournemouth 5-0 in 2018-19. 71 min Ahmedhodzic misses a good chance for a non-consolation goal, lifting over the bar from a tight angle after a nice give-and-go with Traore. 70 min: Triple subsitution for Newcastle Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Alexander Isak replace Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier. Bruno Guimaraes has all the time in the world to play a simple pass through to Almiron, who finishes expertly with his left foot. GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-6 Newcastle (Almiron 68) Sheffield United have fallen apart. 66 min: Sheff Utd substitution Anis Ben Slimane replaces Gustavo Hamer. 65 min I can’t think of many defenders with a hat-trick of assists in the English top flight. Any suggestions? 64 min “Three assists today for Trippier,” says Chris Paraskevas. “His form this season has been exceptional, even during the team’s rough patch. He is right up there with Shearer as one of the most important signings in the club’s history.” 63 min: Sheff Utd substitution Tom Davies replaces Oliver Norwood. Gordon, who started the match on the bench, has been the best player on the pitch and fully deserves this goal. He cut inside from the left, on the edge of the area, and shaped a precise curling shot into the far corner. Foderingham dived to his left but couldn’t quite get there. Newcastle have been terrific but this has been a wretched performance from Sheffield United. GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-5 Newcastle (Gordon 61) Anthony Gordon roars with delight after scoring a superb goal! 61 min: Almiron has a goal disallowed! Anderson puts Gordon through on goal. His shot is well saved by Foderingham, and Almiron is offside when he puts the loose ball away. This could get extremely ugly for Sheffield United. 60 min Life doesn’t get much easier for Sheffield United, whose next four league games are West Ham (A), Fulham (A), Man Utd (H) and Arsenal (A) Schar walked forward like Matthias Sammer and played an angled pass to Trippier on the right edge of the area. He teased a gorgeous first-time cross over Egan and onto the head of Wilson, who stooped to head past Foderingham from close-range. GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-4 Newcastle (Wilson 56) A lovely team goal, and a hat-trick of assists for Kieran Trippier! 55 min Botman hurts his back after landing awkwardly. He’s wincing but is going to try to run it off. 53 min Nothing much to report. McAtee is getting on the ball a bit more, with Sheffield United now playing a diamond midfield, but Nick Pope hasn’t yet had anything to do in the second half. 49 min Souza seems to foul Longstaff just outside the area, but the referee isn’t interested. 48 min This win will move Newcastle up to eighth, five points off the top four. They have a good run of Premier League fixtures coming up. 46 min Peep peep! Sheffield United have brought on Benie Traore for Jayden Bogle, which means a switch to a back four. On the first goal, apparently Anthony Gordon’s handball needs to be deliberate – which it wasn’t – for the goal to be disallowed. There was a handball shout before the second goal as well; Almiron’s shot hit the arm of Schar before being saved by Foderingham. That led to the corner from which Dan Burn scored. It’s good that VAR made everything simpler. Half time: Sheff Utd 0-3 Newcastle Newcastle are cruising to their first away win of the season. They didn’t start particularly well but relaxed after Sean Longstaff put them ahead with a dubious goal in the 21st minute. Dan Burn and Sven Botman headed them further ahead, both from set-pieces by Kieran Trippier, and it would have been more but for Wes Foderingham. Once they hit their stride Newcastle were just too fast, too powerful, too good. 45+6 min Gordon beats Bogle to a loose ball, cuts inside and hits a deflected shot that is tipped over acrobatically by Foderingham. That’s a decent save. 45+5 min Guimaraes drags the ball through the legs of McAtee, reminding him who’s the boss in midfield today. 45+2 min “Sheffield United vs Newcastle is also on the telly here in Cambodia, in case anyone is interested,” writes Joe Buckley. 45 min Six minutes of added time. To say the atmosphere is flat would be an understatement. 44 min The resulting corner is headed away to Gordon, who larrups it into the crowd from 20 yards. 43 min: Chance for Wilson! This is crazily one-sided. Gordon, who has been superb since coming on, eases a through pass to Wilson, whose left-footed shot is well blocked by the outrushing Foderingham. 41 min Apparently Elliot Anderson was hit on the leg by a bottle while Newcastle were celebrating their third goal. He didn’t make anything of it, but I’m sure we’ll hear more about it after the game. 39 min Wilson’s 20-yarder curler is saved to his left by Foderingham. Sheffield United have fallen apart since going behind. 38 min Bogle seems to foul Gordon in the area, but Stuart Attwell doesn’t give it and VAR decides not to get involved. I haven’t a clue any more. 36 min Thanks to all of you who have written in with details of US coverage. Talking of which… “In answer to the question about listening to Sheffield vs Newcastle in the U.S - it’s on the telly, on the USA cable channel,” writes Richard Whitmore. Newcastle started the game slowly but they’re running riot now. It came from the free-kick that was awarded for that foul by Robinson. Trippier swung it to the near post and Sven Botman flicked a good header into the far corner. Foderingham was a bit slow to react though I don’t think he’d have got there anyway. GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-3 Newcastle (Botman 35) And it’s goodnight from Sheffield United. 35 min Robinson is booked for a very aggressive man and ball challenge on Longstaff. Newcastle were fuming and thought he should have been sent off. Just before that, Foderingham made an important save from Wilson, who probably should have scored.
