Footage from Herat province shows destroyed villages and people retrieving bodies from the rubble after the magnitude 6.3 quake on Saturday killed hundreds and injured more than 10,000. Afghanistan is already in the grip of a humanitarian crisis after the widespread withdrawal of foreign aid following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The country is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range as it lies near the meeting point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
