A major incident has been declared at London Luton airport after a huge fire broke out at a car park in the terminal, with all flights being suspended. Footage posted on social media showed flames and billowing smoke coming from the top floor of the multi-storey car park, along with the sounds of loud explosions and car alarms. Bedfordshire fire and rescue service said the structure had suffered a “significant structural collapse”. People have been asked to avoid travelling to the hub in Bedfordshire and local residents have been advised to close their windows and doors. The East of England ambulance service said one member of the public and six firefighters were affected by smoke inhalation. The fire service said there were no casualties and the blaze, which involves numerous cars, was first reported at 8.47pm. It added that the flames had affected 80% of the car park’s top floor. It said: “One half of the structure is fully involved in fire and the building has suffered a significant structural collapse.” The fire service added: “We have 15 fire appliances, and three specialist aerial appliances from across the county and surrounding counties in attendance and this has been declared a major incident by Bedfordshire fire and rescue service. “Fire crews are working to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings and vehicles on air side of the airport. Police and ambulance are in attendance. London Luton airport wrote on X on Tuesday night: “All flights are currently suspended as emergency services respond to a fire in Terminal Car Park 2. “Access to the airport is currently restricted and we ask that people do not travel to the airport at this time.” Molly Bullard posted video footage of the fire on X and wrote: “Scary scenes at Luton Airport as the multi story short stay car park is exploding in flames.” Russell Taylor, 41, flew in to the airport from Edinburgh. He told the PA news agency: “There were a couple of fire engines with a car ablaze on the upper floor of the car park at just after 9pm. “A few minutes later most of the upper floor was alight, car alarms were going off with loud explosions from cars going up in flames. The speed in which the fire took hold was incredible.”
