Adele has quit drinking, she told fans in attendance at her Vegas residency, having been a “borderline alcoholic” in her 20s. Performing at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Saturday, Adele, 35, said: “I stopped drinking maybe like three and a half months ago. It’s boring. I mean, I was literally borderline alcoholic for quite a lot of my 20s, but I miss it so much.” She told a fan: “So enjoy your whiskey sour. I’m very, very jealous.” Last October, Adele told US Vogue that during her first emergency shopping run during lockdown she bought the cult rosé Whispering Angel and ketchup. “Whispering Angel turned me into a barking dog,” she said. “It did not make me whisper.” She said her drinking during lockdown “got earlier and earlier” in the day, and continued: “I’ve always had a very close relationship with alcohol. I was always very fascinated by alcohol. It’s what kept my dad from me. So I always wanted to know what was so great about it.” She told the magazine that she quickly became aware of how susceptible drinking left her to an unsparing media. “They descend, and descend, and descend on you, which drives you fucking mad.” Adele subsequently told Oprah Winfrey that she had stopped drinking after her estranged father, Mark Evans, died in May 2021. “That’s one great way of really sort of getting to know yourself, is just drinking water and being sober as anything,” she said in the pair’s televised interview. The musician’s fourth album, 30, released in 2021, features a song called I Drink Wine, about drowning one’s sorrows and the stresses of adult life: “When I was a child / Every single thing could blow my mind / Soaking it all up for fun / But now I only soak up wine.” The Weekends with Adele residency concludes on 4 November.
