In a significant move toward sustainable and innovative transport solutions, NEOM, the forward-looking regional development in northwest Saudi Arabia, has officially announced its investment in REGENT, a prominent US-based electric seaglider manufacturer. The strategic investment, facilitated through the NEOM Investment Fund (NIF), positions NEOM as the primary contributor in REGENT’s Series A funding round, propelling the company to the next phase of its groundbreaking technology. NEOM’s investment marks a major milestone in a multi-year partnership with REGENT, aiming to revolutionize seaglider passenger operations in the region and further solidify NEOM’s commitment to becoming a global test bed for cutting-edge technology that propels human progress. Majid Mufti, CEO of NIF, expressed enthusiasm, saying: “We’re delighted to invest in REGENT, showcasing NEOM’s dedication to creating a technological testing ground that accelerates human progress. “Collaborating closely with NEOM’s mobility sector, opportunities like this align with NEOM’s goals, in harmony with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. These electric seagliders are pivotal in our journey towards zero carbon operations.” Terry Wong, executive director of Land Mobility at NEOM, highlighted the importance of seagliders in NEOM Mobility’s vision for a sustainable, shared, safe, and seamless multi-modal transport system. Wong stated, “Seagliders will offer a novel approach to coastal transportation in NEOM, connecting key destinations along 468 kilometers of coastline for both passengers and freight. This initiative underscores our commitment to zero-carbon technologies and the cultivation of new industries and skills within the Kingdom.” The collaborative partnership extends beyond mere financial support, with REGENT committing to establish a dedicated Middle East R&D and Training Hub. This hub will play a crucial role in supporting seaglider enablement, as well as infrastructure and operational readiness. Beginning in 2024, Saudi engineering and tech graduates working for NEOM will have the opportunity for work placements at REGENT, gaining insights into the company’s innovative technology. REGENT plans on-site testing to ensure operational readiness by the mid-part of the decade. Billy Thalheimer, co-founder and CEO of REGENT, emphasized the joint focus on solving operational intricacies through this strategic investment and partnership. Thalheimer stated, “NEOM’s commitment to building a carbon-free community through revolutionary design aligns seamlessly with our mission to create sustainable connections using seagliders.” Seagliders, blending the speed of an aircraft with the convenience of a boat, operate by floating on a hull at the dock, utilizing wave-tolerant hydrofoils in harbors, and flying within one wingspan of the surface over open water at impressive speeds of up to 180mph (289 kph). REGENT’s flagship seaglider, the 12-passenger Viceroy, promises a unique and comfortable customer experience, showcasing the future of sustainable coastal transportation.
