RIYADH — The Riyadh Mayoralty launched a project to take inventory and document the buildings that were constructed during the second half of the 20th century (1950-2000) in the capital city. The project, under the slogan of “Memory of Riyadh,” aims to monitor and document the phases of architectural and urban development in the city, and to highlight the remarkable development boom that Riyadh had witnessed over the course of 50 years, in line with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The mayoralty explained that the project highlights the role of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman in the renaissance and development of Riyadh while serving as emir of the Riyadh region for nearly half a century. This is through taking inventory of the most important urban landmarks featuring historical, architectural, and social significance and finding a mechanism to preserve these landmarks and their investment. The project, which will be implemented by the mayoralty, in cooperation with King Saud University, aims to introduce the experiences and architectural and urban thought of generations and the importance of their struggle to improve the lives of the Riyadh residents. It also aims to highlight the importance of the ‘Riyadh Memory’ project, and the role of the mayoralty in preserving the architectural heritage. The mayoralty confirmed that the project would monitor historically significant landmarks and buildings, including old neighborhoods, and royal palaces. It aims to document the era ranging from 1950 to 2000 by highlighting the developmental role of buildings and landmarks, featuring their importance and historical value, and introducing urban thought that contributed to creating an architectural identity of the capital, together with taking into account its development and preservation. It is noteworthy that the ‘Riyadh Memory’ project aims to preserve urban landmarks with the cultural and historical values they contain, and delving deep into the roots of the architectural styles of buildings in the second half of the 20th century, by facilitating the process of rehabilitating, renovating, reactivating and investing them, in addition to providing a database that preserves and documents that era and the succeeding period.
