I was touched by the honesty of Miguel Macias’s piece on the challenges of new parenthood for people with a history of mental health issues (I kept depression at bay by having time to myself. So how do I do that now I’m a father?, 8 November). I have three young children, and my youngest is just six weeks old. I have always used running and yoga as ways to keep my mood up and reduce anxiety. It is such a challenge when you first have a baby to keep some time to do these things (particularly as a breastfeeding mother, but for any parent). I have found, though, that adapting my routines to include my children in the things that I love – running with my (very fast) five-year-old, doing yoga with the three-year-old and working out with the baby (weighted squats anyone?) – has allowed me to find a balance. The first year is always the hardest, but for any new parents wondering if they will ever get time back to themselves, it does get easier. In the meantime, finding joy in sharing your passions with your little ones is a lovely way to connect and relax together. Susie Wall Dronfield, Derbyshire
