Rotherham have sacked manager Matt Taylor following Saturday’s 5-0 mauling at Watford. Taylor was in charge of the Millers for 13 months after taking over from Paul Warne and achieved what Warne could not in keeping them in the Championship last term. However, despite record spending in the summer, against a backdrop of key injuries it has been a poor start to the season, culminating in the heaviest defeat of Taylor’s reign at the weekend. It is understood that the dismal defeat by bottom-club Sheffield Wednesday a fortnight ago was a contributing factor in his exit while the club have not won away from home in over a year. Taylor leaves the Millers with two wins from their opening 16 games and four points from safety. The Rotherham chairman, Tony Stewart, said: “It was felt by myself and the board that we had to act now by making a managerial change in order to give ourselves the best possible chance of retaining our Championship status this season. “We are grateful to Matt for his efforts over the course of the last year and it has not been an easy decision to make. It goes without saying that he leaves with the very best wishes of everyone here at Rotherham United.” A new manager is expected to be appointed quickly and should be in charge for the next game against Leeds on 24 November.
