Five complaints have now been made about Russell Brand’s behaviour while he hosted BBC radio shows between 2006 and 2008, the broadcaster said on Tuesday. Two of the complaints against the comedian and actor were made in the last two months after a review of his time at the BBC was launched in September. In an update on Tuesday the BBC did not specify the nature of the two latest complaints, but reported they were understood to relate to his workplace conduct, and were not of a serious sexual nature. Three previous complaints were made before he was publicly accused in September of rape and sexual assault between 2006 and 2013, which he denies. One was first made in 2019 and relates to an alleged incident on BBC premises in Los Angeles in 2008. Two others were made during Brand’s time working as a BBC radio presenter on 6 Music and Radio 2, the BBC said. The BBC launched its review after an investigation by the Sunday Times, Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches in September in which four women levelled accusations against Brand. One woman in the UK alleged Brand assaulted her when he was in his early 30s and she was 16 and still at school. Another alleged she was raped at his Los Angeles home in 2012. Brand has strongly denied the allegations and said his relationships were “always consensual”. The review, conducted by Peter Johnston, the BBC’s director of editorial complaints and reviews, is focused on its handling of any complaints about Brand’s conduct during his engagements with the BBC, in particular for 6 Music and Radio 2 (2006-8). The BBC previously said it would conduct a review of claims Brand exposed himself to a woman before laughing about it on his radio show when the woman was working in the same building as the corporation’s Los Angeles office. The update said the investigation was “in no way complete” but “it would appear that no disciplinary action was taken against Russell Brand during his engagement with the BBC in 2006-8 prior to his departure from the BBC”. Brand’s use of BBC cars was called into question after the Times reported a woman’s claims that he used the broadcaster’s car service to pick her up from school when she was 16 so she could visit his home. The update said: “Due to the passage of time the BBC’s records of car bookings are no longer available. This means that we have not been able to identify the precise details of this or any records or details of specific journeys or bookings made for Russell Brand. “No one we have spoken to so far recalls driving Russell Brand at the time. Our investigations are continuing.” Both the Metropolitan police and Thames Valley police are investigating Brand after the allegations against him. Brand has denied “very serious criminal allegations” and “extremely egregious and aggressive attacks”, which he said he “absolutely refutes”. Channel 4, where Brand also worked as a presenter, is conducting its own internal investigation. Another company, Banijay UK, has also commissioned an investigation. Endemol, the production company behind shows Brand appeared on in the mid-noughties such as Big Brother’s Big Mouth, was bought by Banijay in 2020. Brand has also been accused of sexually assaulting an extra during filming for the romcom Arthur in a civil lawsuit filed in the US. He has been approached for comment.
