A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after handing himself into police and claiming to have harmed a 32-year-old woman. The woman was found stabbed to death at a house in Honor Oak in south-east London on Wednesday morning after the man went to a police station at 4.30am. The Metropolitan police confirmed that the man had been arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken hospital as a precaution and will be held in custody afterwards, the Met said. DCI Matt Webb, leading the investigation, said there were no other suspects. He said: “This is a tragic incident that has left a family devastated. While I understand the shock that will be felt by the local community, I would like to stress that we are not looking for any other people … and there is no immediate risk to the public. “My thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones at this sad time.” A police cordon remains in place at the scene as inquiries continue. Forensic officers were seen entering the house as two constables guarded the property. Neighbours said the victim was a mother of young children who had been renting a house in the street for about 18 months. Osman Ahmet, who lives opposite, said: “They seemed liked a lovely family. They have two or three kids and they are only youngsters about six or seven. Everybody is in shock at the moment.” He added: “I used to wave at them in morning, but I don’t know much about the family – they kept themselves to themselves.” Police are reviewing footage from Ahmet’s doorbell cam. He said: “I’ve only just had it installed and I don’t know how it works, but the police are going through it to see if there is any evidence. Apparently it happened in the early hours of the morning, but we didn’t hear anything.” Ch Supt Trevor Lawry, who leads policing for the south-east command, said: “We recognise the concern and worry this tragic incident will have caused to residents in the local area and we are supporting our homicide colleagues as they conduct their investigation. I would like to thank those living in the area around the crime scene for their patience and understanding as officers and specialists go about their inquiries. My thoughts are with the victim’s family.” The woman’s family had been informed and a postmortem examination would take place in due course, the Met statement said.
