Internazionale’s Davide Frattesi struck in added time to snatch a 2-1 win against Verona, who missed a late penalty, as the hosts moved five points clear in Serie A on Saturday. Inter opened the scoring through Lautaro Martínez in the 13th minute when Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s pass found the Argentina forward in the box ahead of the defender Josh Doig and he calmly shot low past Lorenzo Montipo into the corner. Martínez had missed the last two games through injury, and his 16th league goal in 17 games sent him further ahead in the scoring charts, with Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi his closest challenger on nine goals. Verona equalised in the 74th minute when Thomas Henry – who had been on the pitch for only a minute – got a touch to Ondrej Duda’s cross to beat Inter’s keeper, Yann Sommer. Marko Arnautovic was guilty of missing two chances to restore Inter’s lead and it looked as if they would have to settle for their second consecutive draw. But added time brought plenty of drama as Alessandro Bastoni’s volley hit the bar and after Nicolò Barella’s follow-up shot from distance was parried by Montipo, the substitute Frattesi pounced to score in the 93rd minute. Before the restart Verona were reduced to 10 men when Darko Lazovic was shown a red card for saying something to the referee but the visitors still had a chance to equalise from the spot. A foul by Matteo Darmian gave Henry the opportunity to net his second and deny Inter, but his scuffed penalty hit a post and the home side held on for the three points. “We did what we had prepared, maybe not always very well, but we take these three points with the awareness that we have Juventus behind us and that we have to continue to win games,” Martínez told Inter TV. The victory means Inter stretch their lead over second-placed Juventus, who travel to the bottom side, Salernitana, on Sunday. Defeat means Verona drop into the relegation zone in 18th spot on 14 points. Elsewhere in Serie A, Monza came through a chaotic encounter to win 3-2 at Frosinone and edge into the top half. Goals from Dany Mota and Valentin Carboni put the visitors 2-0 up at half-time, before an own goal from Matias Soule made it 3-0. Abdou Harroui scored for Frosinone before Soule struck from the penalty spot, but it wasn’t enough. Lecce and Cagliari shared a 1-1 draw as Gaetano Oristanio’s second half effort secured a point after Valentin Gendrey had broken the deadlock on 31 minutes. In Spain’s Copa del Rey, Real Madrid cruised into the last 16 with a 3-1 win at Arandina. The fourth-division hosts did not shrink from the challenge of facing the defending champions, who failed to capitalise on first-half opportunities and found it hard to get past the goalkeeper Adrián Álvarez. But Real opened the scoring in the 54th minute through Joselu from the penalty spot after a foul on Brahim Díaz, who then extended the visitors’ lead a minute later. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have struggled with injuries but put in some solid performances, including the debut of the highly rated 18-year-old Arda Güler, who played for the first time after recovering from several injuries following his summer signing. A stoppage-time strike from the Brazilian forward Rodrygo sealed the win for Real, before Arandina pulled one back through an own goal by Nacho. High-flying Girona built on their stunning La Liga form with a 2-0 victory at Elche. The veteran Dutchman Daley Blind was forced on as a 30th minute substitute and found the opening goal seven minutes later, with fellow defender Yan Couto netting the other goal midway through second half. Atlético Madrid recovered from their recent 4-3 league defeat to Girona by seeing off third-tier Lugo 3-1. Leandro Antonetti cancelled out Ángel Correa’s second minute opener for the top-flight side to leave it 1-1 at the break. Memphis Depay scored his first goals in more than three months, the second a cute arrowing finish, as Diego Simeone’s side picked apart the minnows’ defence after the interval. Getafe left it late to overcome second tier promotion-pushers Espanyol as Luis Milla netted in the 87th minute to seal their passage through to the next round with a 1-0 win. Huesca, another side in Spain’s second tier, frustrated their La Liga opponents, Rayo Vallecano, by holding them to a 0-0 stalemate over 90 minutes. However, they were denied a penalty shootout when the visitors struck twice towards the end of extra time, with Óscar Valentín’s 118th-minute goal quickly followed by Isi Palazón’s effort only two minutes later for a 2-0 victory.
