It is a fitting opener to a year that is likely to see Saudi Arabia host the most significant sporting events in its history. The previous three editions in Saudi Arabia saw tens of thousands of fans in attendance with matches broadcast globally. As always, the Spanish Super Cup is being contested by the winners and runners-up of the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) and La Liga. All three matches will take place in Riyadh at Al-Awwal Park Stadium, the 25,000-capacity arena and home of Al-Nassr. A Madrid derby is set for the first semifinal on Jan. 10 when Real Madrid, as Copa del Rey winners, take on city rivals Atletico Madrid, who finished third in last season’s La Liga. In the second semifinal on Jan. 11, reigning La Liga champions Barcelona begin their bid to retain the Spanish Super Cup crown against CA Osasuna, the Copa del Rey runners-up. The final takes place on Sunday, Jan. 14. All matches begin at 10 p.m. local time.
