King Abdullah received El-Sisi and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba. Egypt’s presidency said the three leaders were gathering for consultations on the Israeli military escalation in the Gaza Strip, and were making robust efforts toward stopping the onslaught, and salvaging the people of Gaza from the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe. El-Sisi is expected to review Egypt’s efforts to broker a cease-fire, ensure delivery of humanitarian aid and relief, and outline its vision on ways to achieve a just and comprehensive solution for the Palestinian issue. On Monday, El-Sisi met Abbas in Cairo for an expanded session of talks, attended by their delegations, on the developments in the Palestinian territories, Ahmed Fahmy, spokesman for the presidency, said. Abbas offered an overview of the Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding there, as well as the situation in the West Bank, where tensions and Israel’s violence have been escalating. Both leaders reiterated their unequivocal and absolute rejection of any attempts to sideline the Palestinian issue or forcibly displace the Palestinians. El-Sisi and Abbas said that the Palestinian cause was reaching a critical phase, and that the international community must work toward a just and comprehensive settlement that envisaged the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. On Dec. 27, talks between El-Sisi and King Abdullah in Cairo focused on Gaza’s humanitarian tragedy.
