Al-Dahdouh’s work is testament to his resilience, says organization Journalist has continued reporting despite the killing of his wife, 2 sons, daughter and grandchild LONDON: Palestinian journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh has received Egypt’s Syndicate of Journalists’ 2024 Freedom of the Press award. The award, presented earlier this week, follows the approval of Khaled Al-Balshi, the head of the organization, in a meeting earlier this month. In a statement, the organization praised Al-Dahdouh for his “resilience in the face of the brutal Israeli aggression and its war crimes.” It added that the award honors all those other journalists who have lost their lives while reporting on Israel’s war on Gaza. The latest assault on Gaza, sparked by militant group Hamas’ attack on Oct. 7, has taken a heavy toll on journalists and media workers. This marks the deadliest period in recorded history for reporters, with at least 79 killed, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Al-Dahdouh, a seasoned journalist who has covered Gaza for over 20 years, has continued reporting despite the killing of several members of his family. Al-Dahdouh, during a live broadcast in October, learned about the killing of four family members, including his wife Amna, grandchild Adam, 15-year-old son Mahmoud, and 7-year-old daughter Shams in an Israeli strike in Nuseirat refugee camp. His son, Hamza, 27, also a journalist, was killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza on Sunday alongside his colleague Mustafa Thuraya while returning from an assignment in Rafah. The award honors reporters and other individuals who actively defend press freedom through their work.
