Six tips to make sure your wardrobe is ready for the coming year Nineties nostalgia For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @arabnews.lifestyle Break out your baggy cargo pants and lo-rise jeans and party like it’s 1999. The old adage that fashion is cyclical clearly still holds water because designers have gone back 25 years or more for inspiration for this year’s outfits. Cargo pants, in particular, are in favor because of their versatility — working for both street-style looks (as with Gigi Hadid, pictured) and smarter, more-refined approaches. And speaking of cycles in fashion, other retro revivals for 2024 include pedal pushers (or capri pants, in the US). The cropped trousers were also a staple of Nineties fashion, but that was already their second time around. They first grabbed international attention in the Fifties, sported by Hollywood stars including Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. Bow. Tied Bows will be just as ubiquitous this year as they were for much of 2023. Whether as design motifs, embellishments, or hair accessories, bows can be used for pretty much any outfit from top to toe. The spring/summer runways at the most recent international fashion weeks were full of them (as well as ribbons and rosettes), suggesting that the ‘girlcore’ trend will remain very much in vogue this year, pushed heavily by NYC-based designer Sandy Liang’s looks (pictured). A particular pink Thanks in large part to *that* movie, pink (of any tone) will remain a staple of street-style and high fashion throughout 2024, but the queen of pinks this year will be the soft shade known as Millennial Pink, which first became massively popular about a decade ago. From dresses to bags to shoes, designers including Carolina Herrera (pictured) are using it throughout their collections, and it’s especially on-trend when combined with bows — Sandy Liang again. Play it preppy School’s out — or, at least, schoolwear is out of the classroom and onto the streets. Blazers, striped button-downs, pleated skirts, sandals, plaid, and polo shirts are back with a bang as ‘athletic academic’ becomes a mainstream trend for 2024. The most obvious champion of this style is Miu-Miu (pictured), whose Spring/Summer 24 collection was full of preppy looks, but plenty of other designers, including Dries Van Noten and Tods. Cut that out Slashes and shredding can give a so-so outfit the edge it needs to become a glamorous hit this year. Numerous labels added some unexpected ventilation to their looks on the international fashion week catwalks, including Y-3, Peter Do, Fendi (pictured), and dozens more. Rose-tinted In keeping with the feminine slant already mentioned, floral motifs will also be a major draw, but one flower in particular: the rose. The idea of this symbol of romantic passion as a muse for designers might be a cliché, but it fits with the overall vibe of unapologetic frilliness that will characterize much of the year’s fashion. Simone Rocha’s Spring/Summer 24 collection (pictured) is a prime example.
