RIYADH: A resident of Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to smuggle 16 gold bars out of the Kingdom. The Public Prosecution’s financial fraud unit said the man was caught with the 24-carat gold bars in a suitcase at one of the Kingdom’s international airports, where he was preparing to depart. He was arrested and charged with breaching anti-money laundering regulations. The gold was confiscated and the man will be deported after his prison term is complete, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday. The Public Prosecution said it remains committed to combating smuggling and money laundering activities, in its efforts to protect the Saudi economy.
