Bayern Munich say they have ended their pursuit of the Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier. A series of approaches from the Bundesliga champions, including an initial loan bid and a £13m cash offer for the 33-year-old England international, were rebuffed, with the Tyneside club insisting they were not prepared to let one of their key players leave this month. The Bayern sporting director, Christoph Freund, told Sky Germany: “The Kieran Trippier issue is over. We only do what we are 100% convinced of. Only when it fits for us and the player and also for the club the player comes from. And that wasn’t the case.” Newcastle have also rejected a loan bid for the striker Callum Wilson from Atlético Madrid, while the Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab have expressed an interest in Miguel Almirón. None of the three players is understood to be agitating for a move. Potential buyers have set their sights on Newcastle since the chief executive, Darren Eales, admitted the club may have to sell players to buy in order to comply with profit and sustainability and financial fair play rules after embarking upon a £400m spending spree since their Saudi-backed owners took over in October 2021.
