Officials from the Royal Commission for AlUla on Thursday launched a month-long campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of preserving cultural and civilizational heritage and historic sites. The “Our Heritage Is Our Responsibility” initiative was unveiled in cooperation with the people of AlUla through a series of student events and workshops. As part of the campaign, the commission will organize workshops for students and run several social projects at archeological sites in AlUla. Commission chiefs working with locals and a team of international experts aim to make the destination the largest living museum in the world, in the process boosting tourism, job opportunities, and the area’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product. AlUla consists of several historic sites including the ancient city of Hegra, Dadan, once the capital of the kingdoms of Dadan and Lihyan, the old town, Qurh (now Al-Mabiyat), and thousands of ancient landmarks and inscriptions, in addition to natural landscape features.
