RIYADH: A stadium, an opera house, and an oceanarium are a step closer to being build in Jeddah after four construction contracts valued at SR12 billion ($3.2 billion) were signed. The Jeddah Central Development Co., backed by the Public Investment Fund, has agreed to develop three major architectural landmarks alongside the construction of infrastructure for the first phase of the Jeddah Central destination, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency. During a ceremony held on Feb 5., CEO of the Jeddah Central Development Co. Ahmed Al-Saleem announced that the construction of these landmarks and the framework for the initial phase is scheduled to begin immediately. The Jeddah Central destination is slated to open its doors to visitors by the end of 2027, welcoming both domestic and international guests. This project is designed to be a multifaceted entertainment hub, and will also boast various facilities, including a sandy beach, a pier, a seafront promenade, and a marina. This development is a significant part of Jeddah’s urban transformation, positioning the city as a leading destination for entertainment and culture in the Kingdom. In December 2023, the Saudi Ministry of Culture introduced the Tariq Abdulhakim Center in accordance with the government’s efforts to enhance Jeddah’s societal ecosystem. Located in Al-Balad, the historic district of Jeddah acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the center houses a museum celebrating the renowned Saudi composer and musician Tariq Abdulhakim, who passed away in 2012. Abdulhakim played a pivotal role in the formation of the Kingdom’s musical landscape, including the establishment of the Saudi military band during his tenure as a soldier. Moreover, in October 2023, PIF established a new company to develop the historic Jeddah district of Al-Balad into a global tourist destination. Al-Balad Development Co. will work to improve the infrastructure of the region, supervise the restoration of historical buildings in the area, and develop service facilities. It will also oversee the creation of 9,300 homes and 1,800 hotel units across 2.5 million sq. meters.
