Company to deliver 9,500 tonnes of track by June New line will link Red Sea to Mediterranean LONDON: A UK company has secured a multimillion-dollar deal to supply rail tracks for a major new infrastructure project linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. British Steel will deliver 9,500 tonnes of track as part of an Egyptian project to create a fully electrified, high-speed passenger and freight line stretching 660 km, with trains reaching speeds of 249.4 kph. Jerome Bonef, British Steel’s rail commercial export manager, said: “We are delighted British Steel has been awarded this contract and to be involved in such a transformational project for Egypt, which will bring significant improvements to the transport network. “The British Steel rail business prides itself on providing value solutions to our customers, being easy to trade with while providing on-time deliveries with world-leading quality.” The first shipment of rail line, produced at Scunthorpe Steelworks, will be delivered to the Egyptian port of Alexandria this month, with a second due in June.
