Croatia"s ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party won the most seats in parliamentary elections, falling short of the threshold to form a government. The prime minister, Andrej Plenković, welcomed the result in a speech to supporters by saying: "The important thing is that HDZ has for the third time in a row, convincingly won the parliamentary election." Plenković said he would begin negotiating with other parties to form a government on Friday. A centre-left coalition led by the Social Democrats (SPD) trailed the HDZ despite support from the leftwing populist president, Zoran Milanović, who had ignored a court warning requiring him to step down from his position as president, a largely ceremonial role, if he was to take part in the polls. The SDP leader, Peđa Grbin, said: "These results are certainly not the way we all wanted them to be. But also, they showed that two-thirds of Croatians want change" Croatia’s ruling conservatives win most seats in election, but without majority
