Phil Foden has been voted the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and Bunny Shaw, his Manchester City colleague, the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year. Foden received 42% of the vote after a career-best season in which he has scored 24 goals for City and contributed 10 assists. Shaw received 53% of the votes, the striker having scored 22 goals in all competitions. Foden described it as “a huge honour” and said: “I could not have done it without the help of my teammates. We have a very special squad of players at City, and I’m privileged to be a part of that group. I strive to be the best that I can be every single day and that is all down to the way the manager and my colleagues always seek to improve and get better.” Declan Rice was second and Rodri third in the vote of the FWA membership, which represents almost 900 football journalists covering English football. Shaw, the Women’s Super League’s leading scorer, said: “I am very proud and privileged to have received this award and to be recognised in this way is a special honour. I want to also thank all of my teammates. They provide me with the chances to score goals and I could not have won this award without them. Hopefully the side can now finish off the season in style and give everyone special cause to celebrate.” City lead the WSL by six points from Chelsea, who have a game in hand, and know four points from their final two games would guarantee the title. Chelsea’s Lauren James was second to Shaw in the vote, with City’s Alex Greenwood third.
