Cristiano Ronaldo’s season ended in tears on Friday as Al-Hilal completed the double, beating Al-Nassr 5-4 in a penalty shootout after two hours of a tempestuous King"s Cup final at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah ended 1-1. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero, saving two spot-kicks at the end of a fierce battle between these two Riyadh giants by the shores of the Red Sea that had everything. There was an early goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic that put the league champions on course for their 11th triumph in Saudi Arabia’s premier cup competition. A late, late equaliser from Ayman Yahya took the game into extra-time however but by that time, three men had been sent off by Argentine referee Dario Herrera. Al-Nassr goalkeeper David Ospina was the first to go, early in the second half to reduce the Yellows to ten men. At the time, it really seemed as if Hilal’s name was on the cup but then late in the game, their two central defenders, Ali Al-Bulaihi and then Kalidou Koulibaly, were red carded. Ronaldo and his team, who finished second behind Hilal in the league which ended last Monday, looked dangerous from the start. Sadio Mane had the best opportunity of the early exchanges, firing just over from close range in the sixth minute but just seconds later, Mitrovic showed the difference between the two teams this season as he made the Yellows pay with the kind of ruthless efficiency that is a trademark of this Al-Hilal team –if you don’t take your opportunities, you will be punished. Malcom curled over a fine cross from the right over to the far post and there was the Serbian striker to head low into the net. Just three minutes later, Al-Nassr had another great chance but Otavio fired just wide from inside the area. Then, just past the half-hour, Yahya had a shot cleared off the line by Al-Bulaihi and Ronaldo’s low effort was blocked by the legs of Bounou. The Moroccan goalkeeper was in action again soon after, pushing another shot from the 39 year-old away and then saving Otavio’s follow-up header from the rebound. It summed up a first half in which Al-Nassr made most of the running, At the start of the second half Ronaldo almost scored the goal of the season with his spectacular, perfect, overhead kick giving Bounou no chance before bouncing off the post. It then started to go more wrong for Al-Nassr eight minutes after the restart. Malcom burst through on goal, Ospina came out of his area and handled the ball and was rewarded with a red card. Al-Nassr still gave it their all and Ronaldo forced another good save from Bounou with a well-struck free-kick but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner cut an increasingly frustrated figure. Al-Hilal were not quite able to put the game to bed and there were some nerves when Mitrovic’s effort just rolled past the post when there was only substitute goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah to beat. Three minutes from the end, Al-Nassr were given a lifeline as Al-Bulaihi was sent off for seemingly headbutting Sami Al-Najei. Immediately, Yahya headed home from close range to spark wild celebrations among the hordes of yellow-shirted fans and to take the game into extra-time There was still time for Kalidou Koulibaly to receive a second yellow as Hilal went down to nine men. There was plenty of space on the pitch in the first period of extra-time given the reduced number of players. Both teams pushed forward but were unable to get the all-important goal and penalties were inevitable. Ruben Neves missed the first kick but then so did Alex Telles. Bounou then saved from Ali Al-Hassan and Meshari Al-Nemer to give Hilal another trophy and send Ronaldo onto the turf in despair.
