A 16-year-old singer-songwriter confronted Rishi Sunak at a pub in Devon, where the prime minister was on the campaign trail. Henry Hassell asked Sunak, ‘Why do you hate young people so much?’ over his plan to enforce mandatory national service if the Conservatives are elected in July. Sunak responded with ‘You’ll have a choice’ and ‘You’ll love it!’ when Hassell said he has already spent his life volunteering. The plans will force every 18-year-old in the country to spend time in a competitive, full-time military commission, or one weekend a month volunteering in ‘civil resilience’
