Algerian president signs decree to convene electoral college ahead of September elections

Tebboune is eligible to run for a second and final term under the Algerian constitution ALGIERS: Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune signed a presidential decree to convene the electoral college for the upcoming presidential polls scheduled for September 7, his office said in a statement on Saturday. Presidential Decree No. 182-24, signed on June 8, also mandates a review of the electoral lists, which will commence on June 12, and conclude on June 27. On March 21, Tebboune announced plans for early presidential elections following a meeting with speakers of the parliament’s upper house – the Council of the Nation – and lower house –the People’s National Assembly – along with other high-ranking officials. Elected in December 2019 for a five-year term, Tebboune is eligible to run for a second and final term under the Algerian constitution. However, he has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election.
