Re your report (Top-price West End theatre tickets rise by 9% in a year and reach £300, 13 June), a record 17.1 million people attended a West End show last year, thanks to stellar performances and smart pricing. Since 2019, ticket prices have dropped by 9.26% in real terms. Most tickets sold are under £55, with nearly a quarter below £30. Less than 5% exceed £150. However, headlines and articles that highlight the top ticket prices of a few hit shows can mislead potential audiences about the availability of affordable tickets. Despite production costs outpacing inflation, theatre producers remain deeply committed to accessibility and to cultivating a new generation of theatregoers. The sector runs numerous initiatives to help those who face barriers to attending events or lack prior engagement with the arts. Campaigns such as Theatre for Every Child aim to bridge that gap. Instead of deterring potential audiences with fears of high prices, let’s celebrate the many affordable options and tackle the real barriers to accessibility, to ensure everyone can experience the magic of live theatre.
