From my mother, Mary Moser, who died in 2022 aged 100, I learned not only to read the Guardian every day but also to see pylons as balletic figures dancing across the countryside. Even if they are unable to see pylons in this way, surely those objecting to them should realise that the destruction that will be caused by the climate crisis will be much worse (Ed Miliband: people must be persuaded of need for pylons near homes, 26 July). Sue Moser Oxford I find it reassuring that the use of cash has not yet completely disappeared – and has even shown a slight resurgence (Surprise jump in number of UK people mainly using cash for daily spending, 24 July). Coins and notes are an essential tool in teaching the very young the basics of money management, especially as the tooth fairy is yet to go cashless. Stuart Harrington Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset While I strongly disapprove of performative nastiness, if the contract for the Bibby Stockholm, signed by the Conservative government, will run until January, could the barge not be moored on the Thames to provide office space for Conservative MPs (Bibby Stockholm barge to close as asylum accommodation, says Home Office, 23 July)? Robin Gardner West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire It looks as if another public inquiry is needed to investigate the number and speed of current public inquiries (Long-winded, fruitless public inquiries just pile more misery on victims. It doesn’t have to be this way, 26 July). Margaret Harris London
