UN expert on the right to development to visit Honduras

GENEVA - The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to development, Surya Deva, will visit Honduras from 11 to 21 November 2024. Deva will assess the country’s efforts to contribute to the promotion, protection and fulfilment of the right to development and realising the Sustainable Development Goals. He will also identify how the Government ensures effective participation of people in development-related policies, programmes and projects. The Special Rapporteur will provide recommendations to the Government for strengthening its legislation, policies and practices in line with the 1986 Declaration on the Right to Development and other relevant standards. Deva will visit and hold meetings in Tegucigalpa, Choluteca, La Paz, La Ceiba, Roatan and San Pedro Sula. He will hold a press conference on 21 November from 11:30 am at the Hyatt Hotel Tegucigalpa, Avenida La Paz, Paseo los Proceres, 11101 Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Access will be strictly limited to journalists. The expert will present a report on the country visit to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2025. Special Procedures, the largest body of independent experts in the UN Human Rights system, is the general name of the Council’s independent fact-finding and monitoring mechanisms that address either specific country situations or thematic issues in all parts of the world. Special Procedures experts work on a voluntary basis; they are not UN staff and do not receive a salary for their work. They are independent from any government or organization and serve in their individual capacity.
