A military helicopter belonging to the Ethiopian Air Force crashed on Saturday at the Belay Zeleke International Airport in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region, according to media reports. The crash occurred around midday, but details remain scarce, including whether military officials or government representatives were on board, according to Borkena News. An airport worker confirmed the incident to Meseret Media but provided no further information. There are no official reports yet on casualties or the cause of the crash. As a result of the crash, all flights to and from Bahir Dar, including Ethiopian Airlines services, have been suspended, according to passengers and sources. The Ethiopian government has not issued a statement about the incident. The crash follows a visit to Bahir Dar on Friday by Ethiopia’s defense chief, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, who met with regional defense officials. State media shared images of him receiving a traditional honor vestment, known as Kaba, during the visit. Ethio News quoted Asres Mare Damte, head of the political division of the Fano forces in Gojjam, who commented cryptically, “A miracle occurs before the vestment even leaves Berhanu Jula’s shoulder.” The meaning of the statement remains unclear. Reports also indicated that two military helicopters had been flying frequently in the area over the past two days. The incident has added to growing concerns in the region, but details are expected to emerge as investigations proceed. — Agencies
