UN expert on human rights of older persons begins visit to Malaysia

GENEVA - The UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Claudia Mahler, is visiting Malaysia from 9 to 20 December 2024, at the invitation of the Government. During her visit, Mahler will evaluate conditions faced by older individuals across the country, focusing on their access to the labour market, social security, pensions, health insurance, and other forms of social protection. She will address issues such as age discrimination, ageism, and opportunities for older persons to actively engage in public life. Additionally, her analysis will adopt an intersectional lens, exploring how ageing intersects with the experiences of specific groups of older persons, including women, people with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, LGBTI+ individuals, those in detention, and persons of different ethnic backgrounds. Furthermore, she will assess how social changes are affecting families, and will visit older persons’ care facilities. She will look at existing policies and legislation, as well new initiatives under development related to the protection of older persons" rights. Mahler will also assess and highlight effective practices that promote the fulfilment of human rights on older persons and can serve as an example for other countries. The expert will visit Kuala Lumpur and the states of Sarawak, Penang and Perak. She will meet with State officials, the National Human Rights Institution, UN agencies, public and private providers of services for older persons, civil society organisations working with older persons, academics, and older persons. Mahler will hold a press conference on Friday 20 December 2024 at 14:00 (local time) at the United Nations Offices (Level 10, Menara PjH, 2, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Precinct 2, 62100 Putrajaya, Malaysia). Access will be strictly limited to journalists. The expert will present her report on the visit to Malaysia to the Human Rights Council in September 2025.
